I Should’ve Brought My Surgery Set

In the latest dental mission I went to, I worked independent from my team. I was invited to join a nationwide Medical-Dental event that was participated by various sectors but I came on my own, so I came representing You and Your Teeth Dental Clinic (my dental practice), and Team Jesus (my mission team).

More confident with my own instruments, I have been accustomed to bringing my set, despite how heavy it is, but I was told I didn’t have to bother because they will bring the instruments. It was more convenient that way, of course, because a full surgery set is quite heavy and it’s much fun to travel light. So I was grateful for that. It seemed perfect–but I was wrong because…

The Mission Life: Traveling from One Mission to Another

Mission Life Entry #2. Monday, 17th April 2017, Departure Area Legazpi Airport.

10:55am. My flight back to Manila is delayed. I am heading back from a mission with Team Jesus and I hope to rush home so I could rest, recuperate and finish packing for Tacloban. When I said “yes” to the holy week mission, I wasn’t thinking straight. But I thought, the clinic will be closed anyway, so I might as well–and I’m glad I made that decision.

The Mission Life: Unboxed

Mission Life Entry #1: Saturday, 25th January. Tabacco, Albay

8:30am. Sometimes, I don’t know what I’m doing. Right now I’m stuck in Tabacco, Albay waiting for the ferry that will take me to Catanduanes. I didn’t make it to the 7am one, so I have no choice but to wait for the next trip. I didn’t make it to the 7am one because I didn’t factor in EDSA traffic and the 12hr bus ride stretched to a torturous 15hrs.

Finding My Purpose

The other day I woke up to a very bad dream. In the dream I was a bad dentist. So bad that friends and family hated me. I remember waking up sad… and then I started crying. I was in a mission, sleeping with a doctor on the other bed, and I started to sob. “It’s just a dream, Crix”, I said. “Just a dream.”

As a dentist, my primary patients are my family. On the chair, is my youngest sister.

Dear PDiggy: Please Work On Lasting Peace for the Mangyans (and Every Filipino)

team jesus 14.jpg
If my Papa were alive today, I don’t think he’d allow me to join the mission team in the mountains of Mindoro. A military man, he was the enemy of the LEFT, and in fact we weren’t allowed to enroll in UP for he feared we’re too gullible and just find ourselves in the mountains. I don’t know. But if my Papa were alive today, I’d tell him the ceasefire is real where I came from.

Work to Earn to Give

team jesus 2.jpg
Last weekend I traveled with the Christian missionary group, Team Jesus, to serve Mangyan tribes in Mindoro. In the morning of the first mission day, our devotion was based on Ephesians 4:28 and it spoke of three types of people: those who steal to get what they want/need; those who work to get what they want/need, which is how we most are; and those who work to get what they want/need to be able to GIVE, which is how God wants us to be.

Patient Chronicles: Please Do Not Use “Injections” to Discipline Your Children

One day at Healthway, I was queued outside of the employee washroom and a little boy was being playful along the corridor. He wasn’t really being bad. He was just fine, actually (unremarkable because I remember smiling at him when I saw) but then I heard his mom call to him.
Mom: Halika dito ang likot mo! (Come here, you’re so naughty!)
Boy goes to his mother. I just stand there and smile at them. I was bored. Person in the washroom, before me, was taking so long (I wonder why?) Suddenly boy stands up and decides to play around the corridor again.
Mom: Stop playing around! Cge ayan na si Doc, bigyan ka ng injection! (You have to behave or the doctor will give you an injection)

The mom smiles at me and then winks. The person before me, has just exited the washroom and it was my perfect cue to leave. But just before I do so, I look at the mom and say: “Oh, please don’t use the injection to scare him.”
